Troops of the Joint Task Force, Tundun Wada, have arrested a 55-year-old suspected notorious kidnapper during a security operation in Sumana village, Tundun Wada Local Government Area of Kano State.

This is contained in a statement issued by Capt. Babatunde Zubairu, Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 3 Brigade, Kano.

According to the statement, the suspect was apprehended on April 20 and paraded before the Brigade Commander, Brig.-Gen. Ahmed Tukur, who celebrated the easter festivals with troops of Foward Operating Base (FOB)Falgore in Doguwa Local Government Area of Kano State.

The commander lauded the troops for their bravery and professionalism.

According to the statement, a cache of arms, ammunition and other critical items were recovered during the operation.

Items recovered include one fabricated AK-47 rifle, one Den gun, nine rounds of 9mm pistol ammunition, one woodland camouflage uniform, one desert camouflage, one woodland camouflage vest and a Bajaj motorcycle seat suspected to be used for concealing weapons.

Tukur lauded the efforts of the troops, reaffirming the commitment of the Nigerian Army and other security agencies to collaborate with local authorities in restoring peace and security across communities.

He said the operation marks another significant milestone in the ongoing fight against criminal elements threatening peace in the region.

“The Army remains dedicated to its mandate of safeguarding lives and property. We will not relent in our efforts to bring perpetrators of criminal acts to justice,” he said.

The suspect is currently in custody and undergoing preliminary investigation.

Former President of the Senate, David Mark on Sunday called on the Federal Government to be more proactive in its efforts to tackle the menace of violent crimes, kidnapping and armed herdsmen devastating parts of the country.

This is contained in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media Paul Mumeh in Kano on Sunday.

Mark suggested that such violent and murderous groups should be declared as terrorists and should be treated as such.

In his goodwill message to commemorate this year’s Easter celebrations, Mark bemoaned the unabating violent crimes especially in the North Central states of Plateau and Benue that have claimed dozens of lives and properties.

An angry Mark stated: “We must not shy away from the truth. If they are not terrorists, why are they killing people? Why are they destroying communities? Why are they chasing people away from their ancestral homes?.

He decried the unending activities of armed herdsmen suspected to be behind killings and kidnappings stressing that “their activities are unacceptable and should not only be condemned but be prohibited in entirety as nobody has the right to take anybody’s life”.

On the unabating ferocious and murderous attacks on several communities in Benue and Plateau States, Senator Mark called on the Federal Government to proscribe open grazing in all parts of the country and, in place of open grazing, establish enclosed ranching, which is the best practices worldwide.

The former Senate President, whose Otukpo , Benue South country home has been under suspected herdsmen attacks called for more inclusive approach to tackle insecurity in all ramifications.

Mark also called for the establishment of a well-equipped Border Security Forces (BSF) to halt the influx of criminals into the country pointing out that most of these suspected herders killing our people took advantage of the porosity of our borders by streaming into the country from our neighbouring countries.

“We must not allow criminal elements to stream into our country. We must, therefore, change our strategy. Maybe, we can begin to think of fencing our borders like India, Israel, the United States and Mexico “.

When established he said that the National Border Security Force (NBSF) would not only be saddled with the mandate of policing our porous borders but would also have the mandate of fighting terrorism, kidnapping and other violent crimes.

Justifying his current stance, Senator Mark, who decried the carnage going on in Benue and Plateau States, said that a debilitating disease deserves a more serious medication if it must be cured.

He commiserated with the people and governments of Benue and Plateau States and all those who lost their loved ones.

The 3 Brigade, Kano, on Thursday emerged winner in the One Division Inter-Brigade Corporal and Below combat proficiency Competition 2025.

The four days competition was held at 3 Brigade, Bukavu Barracks, Kano, among three formations under one Division of the Nigerian Army.

The Chief Judge, Lt. Col. Mustaheen Edu, who announced the results after the four-day keen contest, said 3 Brigade scored 1,096 points to emerge overall winners of the competition.

He said that 1 Division Kaduna came second with 956.5 and 31 Artillery Brigade, Minna came third with 857 points each.

He said that the formations participated in various activities including drill, weapon handling, combat swimming, map reading, 10 km fitness test, obstacle crossing among others.

Participants who distinguished themselves in various events contested for were given award prizes in the male and female categories.

Winners in each event were presented with trophies, while 31 Artillery Brigade, Minna was given a wooden spoon having emerged third position.

Speaking during the closing ceremony, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 1 Division, Maj.-Gen. Mayerinso Saraso, emphasised the importance of training in the Army.

Saraso noted that the annual competition was organized to test the endurance, improving junior leadership skills, and instilling discipline and initiative among Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) within a specified rank bracket in the Division.

He said that the exercise also seeks to enhance combat proficiency, marksmanship, and physical fitness through regular training.

“It is in line with the Chief of Army Staff’s (COAS) Command Philosophy, which is “To consolidate the transformation of the Nigerian Army towards bequeathing a well-motivated and combat-ready force that can effectively discharge its constitutional responsibilities within a joint and multi-agency environment.

“The competition featured three formations, all drawn from 1 Division. Each formation—3 Brigade, 1 Division Garrison, and 31 Artillery Brigade—nominated 55 participants to take part in the event.

“Judging by the enthusiasm and preparedness of the participants for the concluding event, it is evident that the objectives of the competition have been largely achieved, based on the outcomes recorded in the earlier events,” he said.

The special guest of honor, Air Cmdre Sani Zakari Rtd, urged the participants whose best was not good enough to accept their position in the spirit of sportsmanship and return to training with renewed determination, as the road to the future remains a continuous journey.

He said that the Nigerian Army, under the visionary leadership of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, continued to forge ahead in its drive for professionalism and excellence.

Zakari urged the troops to sustain effective training, which remains the best form of welfare.

“This aligns with the popular quote by the late American General, Herbert Norman Schwarzkopf Jr., who said: “The more you sweat in peacetime, the less you bleed during war,” he added.

Zakari appreciated the GOC Maj.-Gen. Mayerinso Saraso, for organising the event, which has direct impact on junior leadership development.

He also commended the Commander of 3 Brigade, Brig.-Gen. Ahmed Tukur for providing such excellent training facilities.

“General, you have done well. Your organising team is a testament to your commendable leadership. I encourage you to sustain the momentum,” he said.

The Commander, 3 Brigade, Brig.-Gen. Ahmed Tukur said the competition was organised to foster team spirit and enhance the combat readiness of officers in preparation for future operations.

He said the objectives of the four-day competition were successfully achieved.

Tukur commended the participants for their performance and urged them to remain committed and productive in their assigned duties.

The commander also appreciated the team of umpires and heads of other security agencies who witnessed the exercise.
