Kano State House of Assembly has passed a bill for a law to compel
intending couples to undergo HIV, hepatitis and sickle cell anaemia screening before marriage.

The passage followed deliberations in the Committee of the Whole House during plenary session,
presided over by the Speaker, Ismail Falgore on Monday in Kano.

After deliberations, the lawmakers approved the 3rd reading of the bill, read by the Deputy Clerk, Alhaji Nasiru Magaji.

Shortly after passage of the bill, the Majority Leader of the house, Lawan Hussein (NNPP-Dala), stated that “any person
intending to marry shall first submit self for medical examinations.”

He said the bill was considered and passed after the 3rd reading, following various legislative processes.

The leader further said that the bill was passed because the state had been battling with different health issues, including
HIV because people go into marriages without medical screening.

He said that the bill, if signed into law, would save many lives and curb the spread of life-threatening diseases.

“The bill will safeguard the health of citizens by institutionalising pre-marital testing to check the spread of diseases
like hepatitis, HIV and sickle cell anaemia,” he added.

Vice President Kashim Shettima has appealed to politicians in Kano State to put aside political differences in the interest of unity and the development of the state.
He made the appeal in the presence of Kano State Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, the state APC Chairman Alhaji Abdullahi Abbas, and other key political figures from both the Kwankwasiyya and Gandujiyya factions, during a condolence visit over the passing of the Galadiman Kano, late Abbas Sunusi.
The Vice President stressed that it would be a grave mistake for a politically influential state like Kano to allow political rifts to sow division among its people or disrupt peace in the region.
“Kano is a model for the entire country. It worries us to see rising political tensions and blame games. Kano is the heart of the North—what affects Kano affects the entire North,” Shettima said.
He noted that although he is not a native Hausa speaker, he chose to deliver his message in Hausa to ensure it resonates clearly with the people.
The Vice President prayed for the soul of the late Galadiman Kano and asked God to grant him paradise.
He also extended his condolences to the families of those who were abducted in Shanono and those who lost their lives during the recent attack by armed men in the area.
“May God bless Nigeria with lasting peace,” he added.
