COAS inaugurates students hostel in Kano

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja has inaugurated Community Students Hostel built for Sumaila Local Government students studying in Kano.

Inaugurating the project on Friday in Wailari quarters, Lagbaja said the project was part of efforts to encourage learning in the state.

He explained that the Special Intervention Projects was initiated by his office to support communities of serving senior officers of the Nigerian Army, who through dedication to duty and service to the nation rose to the enviable rank of Maj.-Gen.

Represented by GOC one Division, Kaduna, Maj.Gen Mayirenso Saraso, said that the project would complement existing infrastructure , promote and strengthen Civil-Military Cooperation in such benefiting communities.

According to him, the project would further serve as an avenue to associate with communities.

The COAS congratulated the project executor, Maj.- Gen. Sani Ibrahim who is the Commandant Nigerian Army Institute of Science Education and Technology for the timely completion of the project and the quality of work done.

Lagbaja used the occasion to thanked President Bola Tinubu for his continuous strategic ideas and support to the Nigerian Army.

In a remark, the Army Chief of Civil Military Relations, Maj Gen Nosakhare Ugbo, commended COAS for funding the project and giving back to Nigerians and putting smiles on the faces of the communities.

He noted that the projects, which were built in the community were products of healthy symbiotic relationship between the Military and the civilians.

According to him, the centre will further strengthen civil military relations.

Ugbo called on the residents to support and provide credible and timely intelligence to security agencies to enhance their operations.

The head of Civil Military Relations further urged residents of the community to make best use of the facility.

Earlier in an address, the Project Executor, Maj. Gen. Sani Ibrahim said that the projects would further enhance the image of the Nigerian Army and commended the Army Chief for instituting the programme.

He also lauded COAS for funding the project and giving back to Nigerians.

Ibrahim said that the hostel had three dometries with 30 bunks and borehole would cater for many students of the community.

The Senator representing Kano South Senatorial District, Senator, Kawu Sumaila lauded the Nigerian Army for establishing the project, stating that it would go along way in helping the students of higher education in the area.

Some of the students, who spoke to our correspondent thanked the Nigerian Army for providing the project.

They said that the accomodation would go along way in easing their hardship and improving learning.

FG trains laboratory technicians , technologists on Soil Health Card Modules

Federal Government has commenced training for laboratory technicians and technologists on the use of Soil Health Card (SHC) modules in a bid to enhance soil management practices across the country.
Speaking at the event on Wednesday in Kano, the Director, Agricultural Land and Climate Change Management Services, Mr Oshadiya Olanipekin, said the objective of the sensitization was to train technologists and technicians on the mode of operation of the soil health card scheme.
He noted that the training was aimed at equipping laboratory personnel with the necessary skills to assess soil health and give recommendations to farmers.
Olanipekun added that the training covered various aspects of soil health analysis, including conducting soil tests, interpreting results, and providing farmers with recommendations based on the findings.
The Director also highlighted the importance of the SHC initiative in supporting farmers with accurate soil data.
“Soil health is crucial for sustainable agriculture. By ensuring that laboratory technicians and technologists are well-trained on the use of SHC modules, we are taking a vital step toward improving soil quality and enhancing food security in Nigeria,” he said.
According to him, the engagement with some of the stakeholders would also contribute to developing a comprehensive soil health card scheme for Nigerian farmers.
Olanipekun urged the participants to ensure the effective implementation of the SHC system, noting that it will not only benefit farmers but also contribute to the long-term health of Nigeria’s agricultural land.
He urged farmers in Kano and the country as a whole to take their soil samples to laboratories in order to reduce farming cost and improve agricultural productivity.
Earlier, Managing Director of Kano Agricultural and Rural Development Authority (KNARDA) Dr Faruk Kurawa,emphasized the significance of accurate soil testing.
 “Proper soil analysis and timely recommendations can greatly improve crop yields and help prevent land degradation,” he explained.
Kurawa added that the widespread adoption of the SHC program would lead to improved agricultural practices and greater food security for Nigeria.

Armed Forces Remembrance Day: 3 Brigade NAOWA reaches out to widows in Kano

The Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA), 3 Brigade Kano Chapter has extended support to widows of fallen heroes in commemoration of the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day.

Presenting the items at the 3 Brigade NAOWA Nursery School Premises in Kano, Zonal Coordinator of NAOWA ,Mrs. Zainab Tukur said that the gesture was in recognition of the ultimate sacrifices made by these brave soldiers in service to the nation.

Mrs Tukur urged the widows to remain strong and resilient, emphasizing that the outreach aligned with the vision of NAOWA President, Mrs. Mernan Oluyede, to support the families of fallen heroes.

She acknowledged the noble sacrifice made by the soldiers for the peace, progress, and unity of the country.

“I urge you, our sisters and wives of our fallen heroes, to stay strong for yourselves and your families.

“Remain hopeful, and engage in positive ventures that will provide a better future for you, your children, and your loved ones,” she said.

The zonal coordinator also pledged that NAOWA would continue to offer programs designed to benefit widows throughout the year, encouraging them to take advantage of the vocational training and skill acquisition initiatives being organized by the association.

Items donated include, rice, semovita, spaghetti, tomato paste, vegetable oil, textiles (wrappers), and a cash donation.

One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Blessing Anthony, who lost her husband while fighting insurgency in the North East, expressed her gratitude for the support.

She also thanked the leadership of NAOWA for their generosity and prayed for continued success in their efforts to support widows and families of fallen soldiers.
