AIG Gumel’s Redeployment Clarified
By Aminu Garko
The Integrity Youth Alliance has pushed back against media reports claiming Assistant Inspector General of Police Usaini Gumel was redeployed to Community Policing, Research, and Planning for allegedly calling the suspension of Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara unconstitutional.
The Real Reason Behind Gumel’s Transfer National Coordinator Kelvin Adegbenga says Gumel’s transfer is actually a recognition of his exceptional community policing experience, particularly in Kano State.
During his tenure as Commissioner of Police in Kano, Gumel Reduced Drug Abuse, Successfully combated drug abuse and peddling at the grassroots level, earning an appreciation letter from the Kano State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in January 2024.
Community Engagement Fostered partnerships with local stakeholders, including the Kano State Ministry of Education and the Independent Magazine Publishers Association of Nigeria, resulting in multiple commendations.
Context of the Controversy
Gumel’s redeployment follows his alleged comments on the Rivers State emergency declaration and Governor Fubara’s suspension, which some interpreted as criticisms of the government’s actions.
However, the Integrity Youth Alliance maintains that his transfer is a strategic move to leverage his expertise in community policing.
AIG Gumel is a renowned expert in community policing, with a remarkable tenure as Commissioner of Police in Kano State.
During his stint, he revolutionized community policing in Nigeria, introducing innovative approaches that significantly reduced crime rates.
Some of the key achievements  include Community Policing Initiatives, Gumel championed town hall meetings, outreach programs, and community policing forums, empowering citizens to participate in their safety and security.
Decisive Blow to Yan Daba,  His strategies dealt a significant blow to high-ranking Yan Daba members, with hundreds publicly repenting.
Rehabilitation and Skills Training, Gumel engaged stakeholders to provide skills training and tools for repentant Yan Daba members, enabling them to set up businesses and become self-reliant.
His approach has been recognized with numerous awards and commendations, and he’s now shaping the next generation of law enforcement professionals as AIG of Training and Development.
It’s likely someone tagged him in the Rivers story to stir up controversy, but his track record speaks for itself.
The choice of AIG Gumel by IGP Egbetokun is the right one being the Community Policing Champion of the year 2014 and he has since assumed duty in his new office.
We are confident will raise the standard of community policing to high pedestal.
Let’s keep tracking the progress together, he will be vindicated.
AIG Gumel is leaving a lasting legacy for future generations through his authorship of two influential books:
