APC wins Ghari/Tsanyawa supplementary election in Kano
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has won the Ghari/Tsanyawa supplementary election conducted on Saturday in Kano State.
The Returning Officer, Prof. Muhammad Waziri of Bayero University, announced the result on Sunday in Kano.
Waziri declared the APC candidate, Garba Gwarmai, winner of the election after he polled 31,472 votes to defeat Yusuf Maigado of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), who scored 27,931 votes.
He explained that the rerun became necessary after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the initial election in the constituency inconclusive.
According to him, the supplementary election covered polling units where voting was cancelled or did not hold due to irregularities.
“With a margin of 3,541 votes, Garba Gwarmai of the APC has satisfied the requirement of the law and is hereby returned elected,” Waziri said.
This paper reports that APC supporters celebrated the outcome of the election, while some NNPP members said they would study the results before taking a decision.
INEC officials said the exercise was peaceful, adding that security agencies were deployed to ensure a hitch-free process.
The Ghari/Tsanyawa supplementary election was among several by-elections conducted nationwide to conclude inconclusive contests from the last general elections.

Kano: Abiya Emerges Acting NNPP Chairman in Kano
Hon. Abdullahi Zubairu Abiya has emerged as the Acting Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Kano State following the removal of the former chairman, Alhaji Hashimu Dungurawa.
Abiya’s emergence was endorsed by the NNPP State Executive Committee (EXCO) after an emergency meeting held at the party’s secretariat in Kano.
Announcing the decision, the party’s Assistant Legal Adviser, Barrister Yusuf Mukhtar, said the appointment was in line with the provisions of the NNPP constitution.
Mukhtar explained that the development followed the submission of a formal resolution by the Dawakin Tofa Local Government Executive Committee recommending the sacking and expulsion of Dungurawa.
According to party sources, the Dawakin Tofa EXCO, led by Hon. Abdullahi Ali Uban Iya Dawanau, transmitted the resolution earlier forwarded by the Gargari Ward Executive Committee to the state leadership.
The resolution was reportedly adopted at the second executive meeting of the Gargari Ward, held two weeks after the general election, where Dungurawa was accused of alleged anti-party activities.
After reviewing the report, the State EXCO ratified the decision and approved Abiya’s emergence as Acting State Chairman.
Party officials said the move was aimed at restoring internal discipline, strengthening cohesion within the party and repositioning the NNPP for future political engagements in Kano State.
In his acceptance remarks, the Acting Chairman, Hon. Abdullahi Zubairu Imam Abiya, pledged that the party would ensure fairness and justice to all members.
He also reaffirmed the party’s loyalty to its national leader, Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and Kano State Governor, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf.
