Kano State House of Assembly and the Bauchi State House of Assembly have agreed to strengthen cooperation aimed at improving lawmaking processes and reforming revenue administration in both states.

The resolution was reached when members of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, led by the Chairman, Committee on Finance, paid a courtesy visit to the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Jibril Ismail Falgore.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Speaker’s Spokesperson, Kamaluddeen Shawai on Wednesday in Kano.

Falgore, represented by the Deputy Speaker, Muhammad Butu -Butu, commended the Bauchi lawmakers for the visit and reaffirmed the Kano Assembly’s commitment to deepen collaboration in legislation, House procedures and revenue-related reforms.

Falgore who responded to a condolence message from the Bauchi delegation, said the Kano Assembly was still mourning the loss of two of its members and appreciated the show of solidarity.

He also assured the delegation that the Kano State Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) Revenue Harmonization Law of 2016 remained in force and was available for review by the Bauchi Assembly.

Earlier, the Majority Leader of the Kano State House of Assembly, Lawal Hussain Dala, said the harmonised tax law was enacted to eliminate multiple taxation and enhance efficiency in revenue collection.

Dala recalled the long-standing relationship between Kano and Bauchi states, noting that Bauchi had influenced Kano’s political development since the era of Malam Aminu Kano, with both states benefiting from shared legislative experiences.

Similarly, the Clerk of the house,, Alhaji Bashir Diso, emphasised the importance of the harmonised tax law to both states and thanked the Bauchi delegation for the visit.

Speaking earlier, the Chairman, Committee on Finance, Bauchi State House of Assembly, Ibrahim Tanko Nura, commended the performance of Kano’s Appropriation Committee and other standing committees.

He said the visit was aimed at exchanging ideas and seeking approval to obtain a copy of the harmonised tax law for study and possible implementation in Bauchi State.

The document, he explained, would be studied in detail with a view to assessing its applicability and potential implementation in Bauchi State, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the state’s fiscal framework and enhance revenue generation for sustainable development.

“We are committed to working together, learning from Kano’s achievements over the years and doing what is best for our people,” Tanko said.

The Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Alhaji Jibril Falgore, has condemned the killing of a woman and her six children in the state, describing the incident as barbaric and heartbreaking.

Falgore, in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Kamaluddeen Shawai, said the arrest of three suspects by the Nigeria Police Force was a welcome development toward ensuring justice for the victims.

He urged security agencies to carry out thorough investigations to ensure that all those involved in the crime were brought to justice.

The Speaker commended the swift response of the police, noting that crimes of such nature must not be allowed to go unpunished in the state.

“This shocking incident committed against an innocent woman and her children is painful and unacceptable. While we commend the police for arresting suspects, investigations must be exhaustive until justice is fully served,” he said.

Falgore aligned himself with the call by the Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, for prompt and transparent handling of the case to reassure residents of the government’s commitment to protecting lives and property.

He assured that the Kano State House of Assembly would continue to support security agencies in their efforts to maintain peace and security across the state.

Hon. Abdullahi Zubairu Abiya has emerged as the Acting Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Kano State following the removal of the former chairman, Alhaji Hashimu Dungurawa.

Abiya’s emergence was endorsed by the NNPP State Executive Committee (EXCO) after an emergency meeting held at the party’s secretariat in Kano.

Announcing the decision, the party’s Assistant Legal Adviser, Barrister Yusuf Mukhtar, said the appointment was in line with the provisions of the NNPP constitution.

Mukhtar explained that the development followed the submission of a formal resolution by the Dawakin Tofa Local Government Executive Committee recommending the sacking and expulsion of Dungurawa.

According to party sources, the Dawakin Tofa EXCO, led by Hon. Abdullahi Ali Uban Iya Dawanau, transmitted the resolution earlier forwarded by the Gargari Ward Executive Committee to the state leadership.

The resolution was reportedly adopted at the second executive meeting of the Gargari Ward, held two weeks after the general election, where Dungurawa was accused of alleged anti-party activities.

After reviewing the report, the State EXCO ratified the decision and approved Abiya’s emergence as Acting State Chairman.

Party officials said the move was aimed at restoring internal discipline, strengthening cohesion within the party and repositioning the NNPP for future political engagements in Kano State.

In his acceptance remarks, the Acting Chairman, Hon. Abdullahi Zubairu Imam Abiya, pledged that the party would ensure fairness and justice to all members.

He also reaffirmed the party’s loyalty to its national leader, Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and Kano State Governor, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf.

Kano Assembly decries imbalance in Customs recruitment exercise

The Kano State House of Assembly has expressed concern over what it described as injustice and regional imbalance in the ongoing recruitment exercise conducted by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).

The lawmakers alleged that the process heavily favoured states from the southern part of the country, particularly the South-West region, at the expense of the North.

The concern followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by the Majority Leader, Alhaji Lawan Hussaini Dala, during Thursday’s plenary session.

Presenting the motion, Dala said the recruitment exercise violated the principles of Federal Character meant to ensure equity and fair representation in federal employment.

He said that out of a total of 1,785 persons recruited nationwide, the South-West received more than half of the total slots, describing the distribution as “grossly unfair and unacceptable.”

According to him, Lagos got 207 slots, Ogun 145, Ondo 132, Osun 127, Oyo 108 and Ekiti 93 — making a total of 812 recruits from the South-West alone.

“In comparison, the North-West received only about seven per cent of the total recruitment, with Kano getting 31, Katsina 20, Jigawa 18 and Zamfara 16,” he said.

Dala said the entire northern region got only 651 slots, while the majority were allotted to southern states.

He called on the House to officially communicate its position to relevant federal authorities, including the National Assembly, the Federal Character Commission (FCC) and the Nigeria Customs Service, to demand a review of the exercise in the interest of fairness and inclusivity.

The Majority Leader warned that continued regional imbalance in federal employment could fuel mistrust and threaten national unity.

Other members who contributed to the debate supported the motion and urged northern lawmakers at the National Assembly to take up the matter for redress.

They stressed that equitable representation in federal recruitment remained vital to sustaining Nigeria’s unity and promoting a sense of belonging among citizens.

In his ruling, the Speaker, Alhaji Jibril Ismail Falgore, commended Dala for raising the motion, describing it as patriotic and in defence of justice and fairness.

He directed the relevant House Committee to investigate the recruitment figures and report back for further legislative action.
