No retreat, no surrender on tomorrow’s protest — NLC

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has reiterated its decision to go forward with its plan for a nationwide protest scheduled to begin tomorrow, Wednesday.

The NLC and its Trade Union Congress (TUC) counterpart have ruled out the suspension of nationwide mass action against the fuel price hike and other policies of the federal government.

Joe Ajaero, President of the NLC, disclosed this to journalists Tuesday night at Labour House, Abuja.

Earlier, Festus Osifo, TUC President, said labour leaders were going into a meeting to decide the final outcome of the protest.

Osifo said this after a meeting with Federal Government representatives led by Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu.

Gbajabiamila had said there were indications that labour would not go ahead with the protest.

But in his address, Ajaero said the protest would go on as planned.

The labour leader said the meeting held with representatives of the federal government did not change the union’s position on protest.

He directed state councils of the congress to mobilize heavily for the action.

“We have neither reconsidered nor suspended the nationwide mass protest.

“We want to inform all Nigerians that we have just risen from a meeting with the federal government where we sought to get them to listen to the demands of the people and workers of Nigeria.”

“The outcome of this meeting earlier today has, however, not changed anything or the course that we have set for ourselves tomorrow as custodians of the interests and desires of Nigerian workers and people.

“Nigerians are advised to ignore the work of fifth columnists who are working hard against the wishes of the people.

“We urge everyone to gather in our respective states and wherever we may be across the nation to give vent to this collective resolve.

“Once again, the Nationwide Mass Protest will start tomorrow,” Ajaero told journalists.

He listed labour’s demands as immediate implementation in good faith, of their resolutions with the Congress jointly signed with the government and the TUC, as well as “immediate reversal of all anti-poor policies of the government, such as hikes in school fees for tertiary institutions and fuel prices.”.

Other demands include the fixing of local refineries in Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna; the release of 8 months worth of withheld salaries of university lecturers and workers; accord appropriate recognition and support to the presidential steering committee and the work of its sub-committees; and put a stop to inhumane actions and policies of the government.

Tax reform: Coalition of Northern Groups advocates for equitable tax system

The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), a youth organisation, has called for a more equitable tax system in Nigeria, urging policymakers to implement reforms that will ensure fairness across all regions.

The group’s Kano State Coordinator, Mr. Sani Yusuf, made the call during a news conference on Friday in Kano.

Yusuf expressed concern that the proposed reforms, if implemented in their current form, would have severe and disproportionate consequences for Kano State, its institutions, and its people.

“Our position is based on key observations that directly impact Kano’s economic, educational, and technological sectors. Immediate attention must be given to these issues,” Yusuf said.

According to him, contentious aspect of the tax reforms is the introduction of a 60 percent derivation formula for VAT revenue allocation.

“In the absence of transparent data justifying this shift, it is unclear how states like Kano, where consumption is high, will be affected by the new system,” Yusuf said.

He further expressed concern about the lack of publicly available data detailing how these changes will impact each state, particularly Kano.

The coalition also urged the government to release this data and provide justification for the fairness of the new formula, especially if it is claimed that non-Lagos states, including Kano, would benefit.

He said that the troubling element of the reforms was the proposed incremental increase in VAT rates, potentially reaching 15 percent by 2030.

“In a country already grappling with high poverty levels and widespread economic hardship, any increase in VAT will only worsen the challenges faced by ordinary Nigerians.

“The coalition strongly opposes these proposed VAT hikes and we called on the government to explore alternative revenue sources that do not further burden the people of Kano and the rest of the country,” the coordinator said.
