Palliatives: Kano govt to distribute N1.6bn grains to masses

By Muhammad Ali

Kano State Government has called on the Federal Government to revisit it’s Palliatives Allocation formula for more allocation to Kano state being the state with highest population in the country.

The state governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf made the call while briefing press men at the commencement of the weekly executive council meeting at the inner chamber of Africa house, Kano government house.

The Governor said his administration is highly disturbed by the hardship people of the state are facing as a result of the effects of subsidy removal.

While appreciating the efforts of President Tinubu’s Federal government initiative on palliatives, the governor advocated for lion share to be allocated to Kano due to the state’s high population.

“Part of our effort to assist people in the state in the area of cushioning the effects of subsidy removal, we’ve purchased grains worth 1.6 billion naira from the Federal Government comprising millet, maize and rice and contrary to other states who are going to sell at subsidize rate, our own is going to be distributed free” emphasized the Governor.

The Governor added that this is addition to the five trucks of rice donated by the federal government to the State assuring that modalities are already designed to ensure that the distribution process reached the vulnerables in the society.

He said the state government is working out on a plan to very soon provide Cows, Sheep and goats to empower women especially those in the rural areas for self reliance and economic prosperity.

Alhaji Yusuf called on Civil servants in the state to be punctual and remain committed to their duties as the present administration would not condone truancy and negligence to duty affirming that Kano state government would do all it takes to improve the welfare of the civil servants.

He appreciated the support and cooperation by people of the state to his administration praying for the sustainance of the tempo for overall interest of Kano state and it’s good people.

Tax reform: Coalition of Northern Groups advocates for equitable tax system

The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), a youth organisation, has called for a more equitable tax system in Nigeria, urging policymakers to implement reforms that will ensure fairness across all regions.

The group’s Kano State Coordinator, Mr. Sani Yusuf, made the call during a news conference on Friday in Kano.

Yusuf expressed concern that the proposed reforms, if implemented in their current form, would have severe and disproportionate consequences for Kano State, its institutions, and its people.

“Our position is based on key observations that directly impact Kano’s economic, educational, and technological sectors. Immediate attention must be given to these issues,” Yusuf said.

According to him, contentious aspect of the tax reforms is the introduction of a 60 percent derivation formula for VAT revenue allocation.

“In the absence of transparent data justifying this shift, it is unclear how states like Kano, where consumption is high, will be affected by the new system,” Yusuf said.

He further expressed concern about the lack of publicly available data detailing how these changes will impact each state, particularly Kano.

The coalition also urged the government to release this data and provide justification for the fairness of the new formula, especially if it is claimed that non-Lagos states, including Kano, would benefit.

He said that the troubling element of the reforms was the proposed incremental increase in VAT rates, potentially reaching 15 percent by 2030.

“In a country already grappling with high poverty levels and widespread economic hardship, any increase in VAT will only worsen the challenges faced by ordinary Nigerians.

“The coalition strongly opposes these proposed VAT hikes and we called on the government to explore alternative revenue sources that do not further burden the people of Kano and the rest of the country,” the coordinator said.
