Chicken scarcity hits Kano, environs

By Bizpoint

Tarauni, a popular and biggest chicken market in Kano state has been hit with scarcity of the chicken, BizPoint has observed.

A visit to the market by BizPoint correspondent on Wednesday showed that virtually all the chicken selling outlets were out of stock.

Observation by our reporter had also shown that majority of the tables used for displaying and cutting the chickens were empty.

Other tables were seen with a small amount of fresh chicken on display.

Speaking to our reporter, Abubakar Isma’il, owner of Abballah Chicken attributed the situation to the hike in price of the chicken feeds.

He said the rise in price of the feeds had forced many poulterers, including those operating large poultry to abandon the business as they count losses, situation that contributed to the scarcity of chicken in the market.

According to Isma’il, the feeds was initially between N3,000 and N3,500 per bag untill it reached N8,500 last year.

However, according to Isma’il, hike in price of corn this season had also caused the increase in price of the feeds up to between N10,600 and N11,500.

“The situation is terrible. As you can see our tables are empty. Have you ever come here and see our tables empty? This show you that scarcity of chickens has hit our market.

“The reason for this is the hike in price of the chicken feeds. Chukun Super, which was sold initially at N3,500, is now N11,500, Ultima is now up to N10,600 per bag.

“Another reason is the hike in price of corn. You know, mostly the chicken feeds is made up of the corn flakes. So, the hike in the price of corn is what caused the rise in price of the feeds.

“This situation has forced many poulterer, including those with large poultry to abandon the business as they count losses. I know a poultryman that has lost about N1.5 million in one unit of poultry. This is the main reason of the scarcity. People have stopped the business.

“‘Let me tell you that this scarcity is everywhere. If there is no chicken in Tarauni market, so you will not find it anywhere because this is the biggest and most popular chicken market in Kano state,” he said.

Isma’il disclosed that sellers had now resorted to supplying chicken from some states in the North such Katsina, Yobe, Bauchi, Jigawa and other states.

He lamented that they are not getting the desired profit due to the fact that they have to supply the chicken from other states.

“It has gone to the extent of travelling to other states like Bauchi, Katsina, Jos and Jigawa to supply the chicken. The business is not yielding desired profit now because we have to pay for transport and other logistics to bring the chicken to the end users. We are continuing with the business just because we believe there are others that demand it no matter the situation,” said Isma’il

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has commenced a new phase with the inauguration of Hon. Yahuza Ado as Chairman of its Governing Council, a development expected to strengthen quality assurance, consumer protection and industrial competitiveness in the country.
The inauguration was performed in Abuja by the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Jumoke Oduwole, alongside the Minister of State, Sen. John Enoh.
Oduwole said the Federal Government remained committed to creating an enabling environment for trade and investment to drive sustainable economic growth.
She urged Ado to justify the confidence reposed in him by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that effective standards administration was critical to industrial development and global competitiveness.
Speaking after taking the oath of office, Inuwa expressed appreciation to Tinubu for the appointment, pledging total commitment to the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
He said his leadership would prioritise close collaboration with the supervising ministry and SON management to deepen industrial growth and promote Made-in-Nigeria products.
Ado stressed the importance of standards in national development, noting that effective regulation safeguards lives, boosts consumer confidence and enhances the competitiveness of Nigerian products in global markets.
“Standards are the silent architects of trust. They protect lives, ensure quality, drive industrialisation, open doors to international trade and build national pride,” he said.
The new chairman assured SON staff of improved welfare and motivation, stressing that a productive workforce was vital to the organisation’s mandate.
He also pledged support for modernisation initiatives, digital transformation and stronger enforcement of standards nationwide.
Kano residents say the inauguration signals renewed momentum at SON, with expectations of stronger stakeholder engagement, alignment with international best practices and policies aimed at expanding Nigeria’s export base in line with broader economic recovery efforts.

The Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations, Rep. Abubakar Kabir Bichi, says the Federal Government has committed over N12 billion to a solar power project at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH).

Speaking at the flag-off of the project in Kano, Bichi, who represents Bichi Federal Constituency, said the initiative would make the hospital independent of the national grid.

He explained that the project is part of the government’s plan to solarise all tertiary institutions and teaching hospitals across the country, beginning with AKTH.

According to him, the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to strengthen healthcare infrastructure.

“The Federal Government set aside N300 billion in the 2025 appropriation act, and very soon all our tertiary institutions and teaching hospitals, including those owned by states, will enjoy 24-hour solar power.

“This year alone, I have attracted projects worth over N26 billion to AKTH, which has never happened in its history,” he said.

Bichi added that similar projects were underway at Bayero University Kano, Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology Wudil, and Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital.

He also commended Tinubu for supporting the project, describing it as a milestone in healthcare service delivery.

In his remarks, the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Chief Uche Nnaji, said the initiative marked the translation of the Renewed Hope Agenda from vision to tangible action.

On his part, the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Dr Mustapha Abdullahi, assured that the project would be delivered before December.

“This is the first of its kind in Nigeria. We are targeting about 10,000 projects across the 36 states and the FCT to ensure 100 per cent solarisation of facilities,” Abdullahi said.

The Chief Medical Director of AKTH, Prof. Abdulrahman Sheshe, said the hospital spends about N150 million monthly on electricity bills and an additional N30 million on diesel.

“With this intervention, the hospital will save more than 30 per cent of its expenses. This project could not have come at a better time, especially after the recent power dispute we had,” he said.

Before the flag-off, Bichi inspected the ongoing construction of a five-storey Accident, Emergency and Trauma Centre at the hospital, another project facilitated by the Federal Government.
