KIRS targets higher revenue through better customer relations — Chairman

KIRS
The Executive Chairman of the Kano Internal Revenue Service (KIRS), Dr Zaid Abubakar, says the agency is targeting higher revenue generation through improved customer relations and service delivery.
Abubakar stated this in Kano on Friday during activities marking the 2025 Customer Service Week, which focused on promoting stronger engagement between the service and taxpayers.
Represented by Executive Director Support Services Group, Mr Hamisu Garko, said the agency’s reforms were designed to make taxpayers the centre of its operations, adding that effective communication and quality service remained critical to enhancing voluntary compliance.
“Our taxpayers are at the heart of what we do. We have continued to reform our processes to make revenue collection more transparent, efficient, and customer-friendly,” he said.
According to him, KIRS has introduced new strategies to strengthen the relationship between staff and taxpayers, including capacity-building programmes and regular stakeholder meetings.
“We are training our staff to better understand how to relate with customers because they are the backbone of our operations. Without taxpayers, there will be no service,” he added.
Abubakar said the agency had set ambitious targets for the year, focusing on doubling its revenue generation compared to the previous year through innovation, digitalisation, and enhanced public trust.
“Our goal is to improve our revenue performance by deepening engagement and encouraging voluntary compliance among taxpayers,” he said.
The chairman commended taxpayers for their cooperation and urged them to continue supporting government’s efforts to improve service delivery across the state.
“We will continue to build a system that prioritises transparency, accountability, and customer satisfaction,” he said.
Earlier, the Director General of Kano State Signage and
Advertisement Agency, Kabir Dakata commended the state government for its prudent management of resources and the ongoing infrastructural transformation across the state.
He said the remarkable progress recorded in the state’s infrastructural development was made possible by the efficient revenue generation system and the transparent use of funds by the administration of Gov. Abba Kabir Yusuf.
“We are witnessing a great transformation in infrastructure, and this would not have been possible without your collective effort,”he explained.
A taxpayer, Mr. Samson Joshua, has urged the Kano State Internal Revenue Service (KIRS) to simplify its payment processes by fully digitising the system to enable residents to make payments conveniently from their homes or offices.
He said that adopting a fully digital platform would not only ease the stress taxpayers experience at physical offices but also improve transparency and accountability in the revenue system.

Dangote Names Road to Refinery After President Tinubu

Tijani Muhammad
Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Chairman of Dangote Group, on Thursday announced that the main road leading to the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals will be named Bola Ahmed Tinubu Road, in honour of President Bola Tinubu.
Dangote made the announcement during President Tinubu’s tour of the refinery, which coincided with the official commissioning of the Deep Sea Port Access Road in Lagos.
He commended the President for his consistent support for private sector initiatives, describing him as the “visionary” who initiated the Lagos Free Trade Zone while serving as Governor of Lagos State.
“The Dangote refinery complex is, in many ways, your brainchild,” he said. “Mr President, let me just say one thing — the main road leading into our refinery is now to be known as Bola Ahmed Tinubu Road.”
The road is a strategic access route linking the Lekki Deep Sea Port, the Free Trade Zone, and the Dangote Refinery to the Sagamu–Benin Expressway through Ijebu Ode.
The announcement drew applause from dignitaries present, with President Tinubu rising to shake hands with Dangote.
Dangote also disclosed that the Group paid N450 billion in taxes in the previous year and is committing N900 billion to road infrastructure projects across Nigeria.
He noted that the Deep Sea Port Access Road is one of several projects being executed under the Federal Government’s tax credit scheme.
According to him, the Dangote Group remains the highest tax-paying company in Nigeria, contributing more to government revenue than all commercial banks combined.

KIRS targets N600bn annual revenue through NIN-based tax reform

By Abubakar Ibrahim
The Kano State Internal Revenue Service (KIRS) has set a target of ₦600 billion in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) annually as part of efforts to enhance the state’s fiscal sustainability.
The Executive Chairman of KIRS, Dr. Zaid Abubakar, disclosed this at the agency’s Award Night held at Fabs Event Centre, Magajin Rumfa, Nasarawa GRA, Kano.
Abubakar said the target was achievable, citing the support of Gov. Abba Kabir Yusuf.
“We would not have recorded the milestones achieved in the past year without the governor’s support,” he said.
He commended the contributions of agencies such as the Kano Urban Planning and Development Authority (KNUPDA) and the Kano Geographic Information System (KANGIS) in improving compliance and enforcement.
The chairman also appreciated the dedication of KIRS staff, describing them as pivotal to the agency’s success.
He said the agency had captured over 10 million National Identification Numbers (NINs) in the state, providing a strong foundation for tax expansion.
“Our short-term goal is to enrol two million active taxpayers. If each contributes ₦100,000 annually, that would amount to ₦200 billion,” he said.
He said Kano was currently ranked second after Lagos in terms of IGR and expressed optimism that the state could surpass Lagos with sustained effort.
“With six million taxpayers, we can generate ₦600 billion annually by the end of 2025,” he added.
He noted that the state generated ₦65 billion in 2024.
The KIRS boss reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to boosting IGR in Kano and commended Governor Abba Kabir-Yusuf for providing the necessary support, cooperation and an enabling environment to drive reforms in the sector.
Also speaking, the Director of Compliance, Muhammad Abba Aliyu, commended Abubakar for initiating the award ceremony.
“This is the first of its kind in the agency’s history. It reflects a growing culture of appreciation and motivation,” he said.
The event was attended by key stakeholders including Dr. Dalhatu Aliyu, Director of KANGIS, and Aminu Shuaibu, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on IGR.
Nigerian courier reports that Isa Yakubu Yargaya has emerged as the Staff of the Year, receiving a cash prize of N1.5 million and a Renewed Hope house from the state government.
The second runner-up, Zaradeen Umar, received N1 million and a Renewed Hope house, also donated by the state government.
Ten other outstanding staff members were also recognised and received awards.
