Recite with Shetty’ debuts in Kano with ₦1m top prize

Kano witnessed a spiritual gathering on Saturday as Dr. Maryam Ibrahim Shettima, popularly known as Maryam Shetty, hosted the maiden edition of her Qur’an recitation contest tagged “Recite with Shetty.”

The colourful event, held at Mystic Falls Event Centre, saw participants from across the country compete for cash prizes, with the overall winner, Nuradeen Mua’zu from Abuja, receiving ₦1 million.

Speaking at the occasion, Shetty said the initiative was designed to promote unity and encourage the use of social media for positive values.

“This competition is not just about winning prizes, it is about using Qur’anic recitation to clean up the social media space and inspire young people,” she said.

Shetty added that the initiative had already discovered many talented young reciters whose voices deserve to be heard, noting that the project would continue beyond the first edition.

The atmosphere at the event was further enriched by Qur’anic recitations from scholars and contestants, creating a serene and uplifting mood for guests.

The Kano State Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr Dahir Hashim, who attended the event, donated ₦50,000 each to the winners and described the programme as a “rare example” of using social media for good.

Other winners included Muhammad Khalid Idris from Bauchi, who clinched the second prize of ₦500,000, and Aisha Tahir Ibrahim from Jigawa, who emerged third with ₦250,000.

Aisha, speaking on behalf of the contestants, thanked Shetty for the initiative and urged more Nigerians to support programmes that promote Qur’anic teachings.

Shetty disclosed that the Recite with Shetty TikTok page, launched just two weeks ago, had already attracted nearly 15,000 followers, with some of the uploaded recitations reaching over a million views.

Crisis response: EU-funded project delivers new vet. clinic to Katsina govt

Mercy Corps, a Non – Government Organisation (NGO) , on Wednesday, handed over a newly constructed Veterinary Clinic and a rehabilitated structure in Danmusa Local Government Area (LGA), to the Katsina State Government.

The project, which included a 20,000-litre capacity upgraded solar-powered borehole, was executed under the European Union-funded Conflict Prevention, Crisis Response and Resilience (CPCRR) project.

The initiative is being implemented in collaboration with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), and the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD).

Speaking during the event, the Commissioner for Livestock and Animal Husbandry in Kastina State,Prof Ahmed Bakori, commended Mercy Corps and its partners on such commitment to support peace and development in the state.

While praising the state government for restoring peace and stability, the said the project would improve livestock services and the welfare of farmers who depend on animal health services for livelihood.

Bakori buttressed that improved security in the state had enabled development partners to implement meaningful interventions in communities affected earlier.

He said,” Recently, Gov. Dikko Radda was in South Africa to explore strategies for boosting livestock production and strengthening the livestock value chain in line with the government’s economic development agenda.”

In his remarks, Mercy Corps Senior Programme Manager, Mr Philip Ikita, expressed satisfaction on the timely and successful implementation of the project in Danmusa.

He stated that although Mercy Corps began its operations in the state in 2023, security challenges, initially, had prevented the organisation from accessing some areas, including Danmusa.

Ikita said that the project would improve access to essential services, strengthen livelihoods and contribute to sustaining peace in the community.

“The project involves the upgrade of a veterinary clinic from a two room structure into a fully functional six office facility,

“The was embarked on to strengthen livestock healthcare services in the area,

“The programme builds on the success of the Conflict Mitigation and Community Reconciliation (CMCR) project and seeks to promote long-term peace and stability in Northwest Nigeria.

“It works across 48 communities in Zamfara and Katsina States, addressing the root causes of conflict, enhancing community resilience, and strengthening socio-economic recovery,” he said.

Also, the District Head of Danmusa, Ahmadu Abubakar, expressed appreciation to Mercy Corps and its partners for the intervention, describing the projects as timely and beneficial.

Earlier, the Chairman of Danmusa LGA, Ibrahim Na-Mama, represented by his Deputy, Musa Muhammad, expressed appreciation for the projects, assuring that the council would support efforts to safeguard them.

Hon. Yahuza Takes Helm at SON, Pledges Support for Renewed Hope Agenda

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has commenced a new phase with the inauguration of Hon. Yahuza Ado as Chairman of its Governing Council, a development expected to strengthen quality assurance, consumer protection and industrial competitiveness in the country.

The inauguration was performed in Abuja by the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Jumoke Oduwole, alongside the Minister of State, Sen. John Enoh.

Oduwole said the Federal Government remained committed to creating an enabling environment for trade and investment to drive sustainable economic growth.

She urged Ado to justify the confidence reposed in him by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that effective standards administration was critical to industrial development and global competitiveness.

Speaking after taking the oath of office, Inuwa expressed appreciation to Tinubu for the appointment, pledging total commitment to the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

He said his leadership would prioritise close collaboration with the supervising ministry and SON management to deepen industrial growth and promote Made-in-Nigeria products.

Ado stressed the importance of standards in national development, noting that effective regulation safeguards lives, boosts consumer confidence and enhances the competitiveness of Nigerian products in global markets.

“Standards are the silent architects of trust. They protect lives, ensure quality, drive industrialisation, open doors to international trade and build national pride,” he said.

The new chairman assured SON staff of improved welfare and motivation, stressing that a productive workforce was vital to the organisation’s mandate.

He also pledged support for modernisation initiatives, digital transformation and stronger enforcement of standards nationwide.

Kano residents say the inauguration signals renewed momentum at SON, with expectations of stronger stakeholder engagement, alignment with international best practices and policies aimed at expanding Nigeria’s export base in line with broader economic recovery efforts.
