Water restored to 5 Kano LGA’s after a decade of shortage

Potable drinking water has been successfully restored to Danbatta, Makoda, and Minjibir in Kano’s North Senatorial District, ending a decade-long water shortage.

The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Water Resources, Alhaji Haruna Doguwa, during a tour of the three local government areas to evaluate the progress of water supply restoration.

Doguwa reaffirmed the commitment of Gov. Abba Kabir Yusuf to ensuring reliable access to drinking water across all regions of Kano State.

He disclosed that mini water treatment plants in semi-urban areas had been fully rehabilitated, and water supply to the affected communities has resumed.

Doguwa confirmed that water was now flowing in Kunya, Kilawa, and Wailare villages in Makoda and Minjibir Local Government Areas, with efforts in place to ensure the steady supply of water to Danbatta.

“These villages have gone without water for over eight years, despite having piped connections. Neglect from past administrations led to the deterioration of the water treatment plants,” he explained.

Doguwa added that inspections are ongoing in the affected villages to address issues such as rust and leaks in the pipes, which resulted from years of disuse.

He emphasized that these efforts align with Gov. Abba Kabir Yusuf’s vision of revitalizing the state’s water infrastructure and ensuring the continuous provision of clean water for the residents.

Additionally, Doguwa confirmed that water supply to Danbatta would be fully restored within the next week. The current challenge, he noted, is a blockage in a water valve along the Danbatta Thomas Dam, but work is already underway to resolve the issue.

The Commissioner also stated that the government would take strong action against any diversion of water meant for consumption to irrigation purposes.

Some of the residents who spoke to our correspondent expressed their gratitude for the return of water, describing it as “life-saving.”

The Chairman of Minjibir Local Government Area, Malam Jibrin Nalado, expressed appreciation for the provision of a borehole, stating that for many years, the people struggled to access water. He commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for fulfilling his campaign promises.

“We thank God and the government for this gesture. Now, we are all happy to see water flowing in our community,” he said.

Abubakar Iliyasu, a resident of Kunya community in Minjibir, shared his excitement, stating that he had not seen water flow from a tap in over 10 years until it was restored last week.

Malam Sani Wailare of Wailare town in Makoda Local Government Area also expressed his gratitude to the state government, the Commissioner for Water Resources, and the new local government chairman for their efforts in restoring water supply to multiple communities within months.

“We had boreholes in many communities, but they dried up over the past 10 years, leaving us with no choice but to buy water,” he explained.

Musa Isa, a resident of Kilawa village in Danbatta Local Government Area, also shared the hardships faced by the community, explaining that for years, residents had to walk long distances to fetch water or rely on a few wells in the area.

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has commenced a new phase with the inauguration of Hon. Yahuza Ado as Chairman of its Governing Council, a development expected to strengthen quality assurance, consumer protection and industrial competitiveness in the country.
The inauguration was performed in Abuja by the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Jumoke Oduwole, alongside the Minister of State, Sen. John Enoh.
Oduwole said the Federal Government remained committed to creating an enabling environment for trade and investment to drive sustainable economic growth.
She urged Ado to justify the confidence reposed in him by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that effective standards administration was critical to industrial development and global competitiveness.
Speaking after taking the oath of office, Inuwa expressed appreciation to Tinubu for the appointment, pledging total commitment to the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
He said his leadership would prioritise close collaboration with the supervising ministry and SON management to deepen industrial growth and promote Made-in-Nigeria products.
Ado stressed the importance of standards in national development, noting that effective regulation safeguards lives, boosts consumer confidence and enhances the competitiveness of Nigerian products in global markets.
“Standards are the silent architects of trust. They protect lives, ensure quality, drive industrialisation, open doors to international trade and build national pride,” he said.
The new chairman assured SON staff of improved welfare and motivation, stressing that a productive workforce was vital to the organisation’s mandate.
He also pledged support for modernisation initiatives, digital transformation and stronger enforcement of standards nationwide.
Kano residents say the inauguration signals renewed momentum at SON, with expectations of stronger stakeholder engagement, alignment with international best practices and policies aimed at expanding Nigeria’s export base in line with broader economic recovery efforts.

Bichi: I attracted N26bn worth of projects to AKTH in one year

The Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations, Rep. Abubakar Kabir Bichi, says the Federal Government has committed over N12 billion to a solar power project at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH).

Speaking at the flag-off of the project in Kano, Bichi, who represents Bichi Federal Constituency, said the initiative would make the hospital independent of the national grid.

He explained that the project is part of the government’s plan to solarise all tertiary institutions and teaching hospitals across the country, beginning with AKTH.

According to him, the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to strengthen healthcare infrastructure.

“The Federal Government set aside N300 billion in the 2025 appropriation act, and very soon all our tertiary institutions and teaching hospitals, including those owned by states, will enjoy 24-hour solar power.

“This year alone, I have attracted projects worth over N26 billion to AKTH, which has never happened in its history,” he said.

Bichi added that similar projects were underway at Bayero University Kano, Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology Wudil, and Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital.

He also commended Tinubu for supporting the project, describing it as a milestone in healthcare service delivery.

In his remarks, the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Chief Uche Nnaji, said the initiative marked the translation of the Renewed Hope Agenda from vision to tangible action.

On his part, the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Dr Mustapha Abdullahi, assured that the project would be delivered before December.

“This is the first of its kind in Nigeria. We are targeting about 10,000 projects across the 36 states and the FCT to ensure 100 per cent solarisation of facilities,” Abdullahi said.

The Chief Medical Director of AKTH, Prof. Abdulrahman Sheshe, said the hospital spends about N150 million monthly on electricity bills and an additional N30 million on diesel.

“With this intervention, the hospital will save more than 30 per cent of its expenses. This project could not have come at a better time, especially after the recent power dispute we had,” he said.

Before the flag-off, Bichi inspected the ongoing construction of a five-storey Accident, Emergency and Trauma Centre at the hospital, another project facilitated by the Federal Government.
