No retreat, no surrender on tomorrow’s protest — NLC
No retreat, no surrender on tomorrow’s protest — NLC
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has reiterated its decision to go forward with its plan for a nationwide protest scheduled to begin tomorrow, Wednesday.
The NLC and its Trade Union Congress (TUC) counterpart have ruled out the suspension of nationwide mass action against the fuel price hike and other policies of the federal government.
Joe Ajaero, President of the NLC, disclosed this to journalists Tuesday night at Labour House, Abuja.
Earlier, Festus Osifo, TUC President, said labour leaders were going into a meeting to decide the final outcome of the protest.
Osifo said this after a meeting with Federal Government representatives led by Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu.
Gbajabiamila had said there were indications that labour would not go ahead with the protest.
But in his address, Ajaero said the protest would go on as planned.
The labour leader said the meeting held with representatives of the federal government did not change the union’s position on protest.
He directed state councils of the congress to mobilize heavily for the action.
“We have neither reconsidered nor suspended the nationwide mass protest.
“We want to inform all Nigerians that we have just risen from a meeting with the federal government where we sought to get them to listen to the demands of the people and workers of Nigeria.”
“The outcome of this meeting earlier today has, however, not changed anything or the course that we have set for ourselves tomorrow as custodians of the interests and desires of Nigerian workers and people.
“Nigerians are advised to ignore the work of fifth columnists who are working hard against the wishes of the people.
“We urge everyone to gather in our respective states and wherever we may be across the nation to give vent to this collective resolve.
“Once again, the Nationwide Mass Protest will start tomorrow,” Ajaero told journalists.
He listed labour’s demands as immediate implementation in good faith, of their resolutions with the Congress jointly signed with the government and the TUC, as well as “immediate reversal of all anti-poor policies of the government, such as hikes in school fees for tertiary institutions and fuel prices.”.
Other demands include the fixing of local refineries in Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna; the release of 8 months worth of withheld salaries of university lecturers and workers; accord appropriate recognition and support to the presidential steering committee and the work of its sub-committees; and put a stop to inhumane actions and policies of the government.

Abubakar urges Nigerians to unite against threats to national sovereignty
By Aminu Garko
Kano, Former Military Head of State, retired Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, has called on Nigerians to put aside their differences and unite in the defence of the nation’s sovereignty, emphasising the need for national solidarity in the face of external threats.
Abubakar expressed deep concern over reported comments by US President Donald Trump, describing the situation as a “grave threat to the country’s hard-won unity.”
Abubakar,, who is currently in London told the News Agency of Nigeria ( NAN) in a telephone interview on Tuesday that Trump’s comments could jeopardise Nigeria’s peace.
Abubakar emphasised that unity, wisdom, and diplomacy were essential in navigating this critical moment, adding that division and pride would only exacerbate the situation.
He also called on the United States to support Nigeria in combating insecurity rather than issuing threats.
Abubakar, however, said strategic dialogue was needed to engage Washington and Trump through quiet diplomacy so as to de-escalate the situation and address the underlying issues.
He stressed, “Unity, wisdom, and diplomacy must take precedence over division and pride at this critical moment.”
He urged the US to support Nigeria in combating insecurity rather than issuing threats of an attack on the West African nation.

Kano. The Kano State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has appointed the Bureau Chief of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Aminu Garko, as the Chairman of its Ethics and Disciplinary Committee.
The News Agency of Nigeria ( NAN) reports that the appointment, which took effect immediately, will span a two-month tenure and is seen as a strategic move to uphold ethical standards and accountability within the union.
In an official letter signed by the council Chairman, Mr Sulaiman Dederi, the NUJ praised Garko’s “commendable track record, discipline, resilience, and unwavering commitment to professional responsibilities.”
His appointment, according to the union, was grounded in the provisions of Article 7(1)(a) of the NUJ Constitution.
The letter read, “The Clcouncil is confident that your integrity and dedication will contribute meaningfully to the work of this Committee.
“You are expected to discharge your duties in accordance with the NUJ constitution and the terms of reference attached to this letter.”
The ethics and disciplinary committee plays a critical role in promoting accountability and professionalism among journalists in Kano State.
Garko’s leadership is expected to bring fresh momentum to the council’s efforts to maintain journalistic integrity and enforce ethical compliance among members.
Garko, a seasoned journalist with decades of experience in the media industry, is widely respected in the Nigerian press for his principled reporting and leadership.
His colleagues describe him as a “bridge between generations of journalists” and a “model of integrity in the profession.”
While addressing Reporters following the announcement, Dederi reaffirmed the council’s commitment to transparency and discipline.
“The union must continually reinvent itself by setting high ethical standards and holding members accountable.
“With Mr Garko leading this important committee, we are confident that the right tone will be set,” he said.
The terms of reference guiding the committee’s activities were enclosed with the appointment letter and are expected to serve as the foundation for the committee’s operations during Garko’s tenure.
The appointment is seen by many as a reaffirmation of the NUJ’s dedication to professional excellence, especially at a time when ethical journalism is increasingly being called into question amid the rise of misinformation.

Nigeria@65:Kano speaker tasks Nigerians on nation building, resource harnessing
The Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Alhaji Jibril Falgore, has congratulated Nigerians on the country’s 65th Independence Anniversary, urging citizens to unite in the fight against corruption to redeem the nation’s dignity.
Falgore made the call in a statement issued by his Spokesperson, Kamaluddeen Sani Shawai, on Wednesday in Kano.
He described Nigeria’s 65-year journey since independence as a mix of achievements and missed opportunities, noting that with clear vision and strategic planning, the country’s future remains promising.
He said the anniversary offered an opportunity to reflect on the courage and foresight of the nation’s founding fathers, who laid the foundation for a united, sovereign and democratic Nigeria.
“Sixty-five years on, despite challenges, Nigeria remains a country of over 230 million people, mostly young, energetic and forward-looking. This is a unique asset many nations do not possess,” he said.
Falgore stressed that it was time for Nigerians to move beyond lamentations and focus on harnessing the nation’s abundant human and material resources for development.
“As a people, we must realize that we owe future generations, and indeed Nigeria, a duty to redeem our dignity by killing corruption and harnessing our resources for development,” he said.
The Speaker reaffirmed the commitment of the Kano State House of Assembly to its legislative and oversight responsibilities, adding that the Assembly maintains a zero-tolerance stance on corruption while working to improve the lives of the people.
He congratulated Gov. Abba Kabir Yusuf, the people of Kano State, and all Nigerians on the milestone anniversary, urging unity and collective action to build a prosperous nation.
“May this anniversary inspire us all to rise above divisions and work together for a prosperous nation where justice, equity and development prevail. Happy 65th Independence Anniversary, Nigeria,” he added.
