Barau charges ECOWAS parliament on regional prosperity, security

Kano-The first Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Senator Barau Jibrin, has charged ECOWAS parliament on peace, security and prosperity of the region.
This paper reports that Jibrin made the call at the opening of the 2024 second extraordinary session of the sixth legislature of the ECOWAS Parliament Tuesday, in Kano.
Jibrin, who is the acting Speaker of the parliament, called on the members to work together to foster peace, security and unity in the region.
The Deputy Senate President said that the objectives of the parliament was to ensure integration of the entire ECOWAS Community,with the aim of enhancing maximum security and prosperity in the entire region.
He said the Extraordinary Session would deliberate on a work plan that would fine tune modalities of absolute integration of the Ecowas Community.
Jibrin explained that among the issues to be discussed includes measures to be taken in addressing challenge like violent extremism, insecurity and other numerous challenges bedeviling the development of the region.
The deputy president of the senate also announced ECOWAS Parliament plans to establish a mediation committee aimed at re-integrating aggrieved member states.
The lawmaker emphasized the critical need for Parliament’s intervention in regional issues, as highlighted by the President of the ECOWAS Commission during the Inaugural Session.
He further said the President had called for urgent efforts to prevent the disintegration of the regional bloc, particularly with the potential departures of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso.
The first deputy speaker also stressed the importance of confronting non-state groups vying for control of resources and marginalizing states, which has led to severe insecurity, especially in the Sahel region.
Earlier, Gov. Abba Kabir-Yusuf called on the ECOWAS Parliament to address some of the problems bedeviling the region.
Kabir-Yusuf urged them to focus on regional corporation and security, regional currency, citizenship, national security, environment and education of the member states.
He then restates the state government commitment to give all necessary support to ECOWAS Parliament
The governor then called on the sixth Legislature of the ECOWAS Parliament to build in the good work of the 5th parliament geared towards Achieving the set objectives.
