Uromi killings: Reps Member Rurum Calls for Ban on North-South Movement of Hunters

A member of the House of Representatives, Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, has called for a total ban on the movement of hunters from Northern to Southern parts of the country, describing the practice as outdated and risky in the context of current national security concerns.
Rurum, who represents Rano/Bunkure/Kibiya Federal Constituency, made the call on Thursday in Torankawa, Bunkure Local Government Area of Kano State, during a condolence visit to the families of hunters killed in Uromi, Edo State.
The lawmaker condemned the killings, stating that, “The present-day Nigeria requires that all cultural or business activities be conducted in a way that does not raise suspicion or create fear that could lead to tragic incidents.”
He described the movement of armed hunters across regions as a potential security threat, saying, “Carrying dangerous weapons and travelling across regions at a time when insecurity is high can send the wrong signal and trigger avoidable chaos. Our hunters must stop this practice.”
Rurum announced a donation of N5 million to the families of the deceased and pledged to begin immediate construction of an Islamiyya Primary and Secondary School in the community to support the orphans of those killed.
He recalled a recent incident where over 30 hunters from Rano were apprehended in Ondo State. “I had to personally visit the governor and present evidence proving their innocence before they were released. If those in Ondo had acted with the same mindset as those in Uromi, the outcome could have been worse,” he said.
Also speaking, Senator Masaud Jibrin El-Doguwa, factional chairman of the NNPP with the fruits logo, expressed deep sorrow over the killings. He urged all stakeholders to learn from the tragedy and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
El-Doguwa affirmed that work would soon commence on the promised school, stressing that it was intended to provide hope and support for the children of the deceased.
A large crowd of political supporters gathered in Bunkure to receive Rurum, who was accompanied by Zubairu Masu, member representing Sumaila Constituency in the Kano.
