Kano Govt dismisses alleged diversion of N6.5bn

Kano State Government has dismissed reports alleging the diversion of N6.5 billion from the state treasury, describing them as false and politically motivated.

Mr Sanusi Bature, Director-General, Media and Publicity, Government House, Kano, said this in a statement issued to newsmen on Monday in Kano.

He said the report published on August 22 by an online platform, Daily Nigerian, was a sponsored attempt to smear the reputation of key aides of the state government.

Bature explained that the allegation, which is already a subject of litigation, particularly targeted the Director-General, Protocol Directorate, Government House, Alhaji Abdullahi Ibrahim Rogo.

He stressed that all financial disbursements to Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) were guided by budgetary provisions and fiscal policies, adding that no official could divert public funds for personal use.

“The Directorate of Protocol handles logistics, welfare, and management of the Governor’s itineraries within and outside the country, as well as arrangements for visiting dignitaries.

“Ninety-five per cent of its responsibilities involve financial transactions executed strictly within the ambit of government approval,” he said.

According to him, the present administration of Gov. Abba Kabir Yusuf is committed to transparency, accountability, and zero tolerance for corruption, and will not be distracted by what he called “deliberate acts of political blackmail.”

The statement further accused the opposition of orchestrating smear campaigns to discredit the NNPP-led administration ahead of the 2027 elections.

It alleged that the immediate past administration under Dr Abdullahi Ganduje spent over N20 billion from the state treasury through the Protocol Directorate within three months after losing the 2023 governorship election.

Bature recalled that the former administration was linked to several corruption allegations, including the dollar-video scandal, land grabbing, and alleged foreign property acquisitions.

“The public should disregard the claims as political propaganda intended to distract government officials from delivering people-oriented programmes.
“This administration remains focused on good governance and prudent management of resources,” he added.

He said the government welcomed lawful criticism but warned that it would not hesitate to seek legal redress against individuals or groups spreading false information to incite the public.

Bature reiterated that the case was before a competent court, adding that the government would not make further comments until the matter was determined.
